Take Action: International Human Rights Day

December 10th, 2008

December 10th marks International Human Rights Day, a day set aside to recognize the inherent rights of every person and to take action for those who have been denied their rights. China's brutal military crackdown in Tibet is robbing Tibetans of even their most basic rights.

TAKE ACTION

1) Send an urgent appeal
to the Chinese authorities calling for the immediate release of 81-year-old Paljor Norbu.
Also, take a moment now to print, fax and mail the letter now to the Chinese government.

2) Sign the Facebook petition to free Leaving Fear Behind filmmaker, Dhondup Wangchen. Help us reach our goal of 20,000 signatures!

3) Contact your governmental representatives and ask that they raise the issue of Tibet and advocate for the release of Tibetan political prisoners on December 10. Download a letter to send to your representatives.

4) Organize a screening of the Leaving Fear Behind, a powerful documentary that allows people to hear firsthand the true feelings and opinions of Tibetans inside TIbet. To order a copy of the film, contact grassroots@studentsforafreetibet.org. Download SFT's screening kit with materials and tips on how to organize your screening.

5) Highlight voices of resistance from inside Tibet.  As part of SFT's effort to raise awareness about the courageous resistance of Tibetans inside Tibet, we are prioritizing six political prisoners who have been imprisoned for speaking out. Organize a letter-writing or call-in event on campus or in your community to pressure the Chinese government for their release. Profiles of Courage: Tibetan Political Prisoners contains information and links on each political prisoner. Take action now for their release.

Organize a 'Freeze for Tibet' event at a busy intersection, public square, or at a well known landmark in your community. Get a group of friends together and have them 'freeze' for one minute with the Tibetan flag in hand and raised above them to show solidarity with the courageous protests in Tibet this spring. Display a banner at your 'freeze' marking Human Rights Day and Tibet so motorists and pedestrians passing by understand the significance of your action. Send photos of your 'freeze' action to grassroots@studentsforafreetibet.org.

Do political theatre outside a busy shopping mall or commercial area in your community and ask people to support Human Rights in Tibet by not buying Made in China this holiday season.
Set-up a mock sweatshop factory or have people dressed up as Chinese military officers arresting or beating Tibetans to symbolize the current crackdown inside Tibet.

Join a protest or candle light vigil at the Chinese embassy or consulate nearest you.
